With the advent of cheap dirt bikes, the number of people riding for fun each year has steadily increased. Of course, with this increase has also come the increase in sports related fatalities and serious injuries. Over time there has been an outcry against dirt bikes in general but cheap mini dirt bikes in particular, since these are enticing younger and younger riders to take up this popular sport and with it the risks that it may carry. As such, safety and dirt bikes are becoming a big issue, and here are some important facts to remember that will keep you safe when riding on dirt bikes:
With the many ads offering cheap dirt bikes for sale it is so easy to find a bike quickly and affordably. Yet just like purchasing a used car, it is important that you check out the machine completely. This means checking the maintenance history for gaps, checking the gas tank for sludge build up, and also running the engine at full throttle to listen for noises that might point toward unsafe conditions. If you are not entirely certain about your mechanical abilities in this respect, it is best to take along a trusted friend or even your mechanic who will be able to give the dirt bikes you are considering for purchase a quick once over. Dirt bikes are not designed for street riding over long distances. Thus, when you are thinking of purchasing one of the many dirt bikes for a cheap price that are being advertised from private parties or stores, make sure that you have a tow vehicle ready. A helmet is not optional. While it is so easy to dismiss the need of this protective head gear with the fact that you are just riding in a bit of dirt, will only be doing it for ten minutes, and that there are no other cars or bikes around, the fact of the matter remains that an accident can take place at any time anywhere, and if you had advanced warning of it, it would not be an accident! Thus, always wear a helmet! Protective body gear is highly recommended. Even at lower speeds the fall off a dirt bike hurts, and if you are riding on a terrain that is littered with sharp rocks, pebbles, sticks, and perhaps even glass, you will soon find out how easy it is to get serious cuts and bruises even if you only have a little fall. Thus, it is wise to have full protective body gear that protects you in case of a fall.
